KARKLOOF CONSERVANCY NEWSLETTER - JULY 2001
To all Karkloof Conservancy members,
Our 5th ANNUAL GAME COUNT is to be held on FRIDAY 20th JULY 2001 - forms are enclosed. Counting will begin on your own farm at 5.30pm and will finish at 7.30pm. Please be back at the Karkloof Club by 8.00pm where Noel and Liz Wright will be on hand to help process our numbers. Supper will be served at R15 per person and our traditional Gluwein will also be available!! RSVP : Pete and Carolyn (033) 3304590 if bringing guests so that we can adjust catering. We wish to record our sincere thanks to the committee of the Karkloof Classic for their extremely generous donation to our conservancy. This support is very much appreciated as it enables us to continue with our various projects of improving enviromental awareness in our community. With Envirowatch no longer operating in our area we no longer enjoy regular foot patrols when snares where found and removed from fences, etc… Pam Curtis, chairperson of the Lions River Honorary Officer Unit of KZN Nature Conservation Services, recently contacted me. There are sixteen members in this unit, all volunteers, with George Zaloumis being their Officer in Charge. If any of you have a conservation problem (checking boundary fences for snares, pigs, etc…) please contact Pam Curtis at telephone number (033) 3304504 or 082 6746613. Alternatively George Zaloumis can be reached at (033) 3307097 or 082 4305290. Karkloof Trails - Mike Exelby has submitted a proposal to Greg Laws of the WWF. His proposal is presently under review and if approved, it together with a business plan will be submitted to the WWF on the 24th July 2001. This first phase is from the Howick Falls to the Karkloof Falls, continuing to the Karkloof Country Club. The second phase would be from the club into the Karkloof valley incorporating the wetlands and indigenous forests. John Scotcher, SAPPI's environmentalist in Johannesburg, has pledged his enthusiastic support of the trail. We will keep you informed. Farm School Outings - The children from Triandra and Hawkstone Schools recently enjoyed outings to Umgeni Valley and the Midmar Dam Game Reserve respectively. Many thanks to the Mackenzie family for transporting and feeding the children from the Hawkstone School and also to George Zaloumis and Brian van der Bank for making this second outing possible. National Crane Count - Brent Coverdale of the KZN Crane Foundation reminds all our crane lovers that the National Crane Count will take place on 27th and 28th July 2001. Forms are available from him or can be collected at the Karkloof Country Club on the night of the game count. Brent can be contacted at telephone number (033) 26327377 or 082 3769464. Talk on the Galapagos Islands - Friday 28th September 2001 - David Johnson has assured me that this talk is still on despite the recent restructuring of KZN Nature Conservation Services. We will however be charging an entrance fee of R15 per person for the talk of R15 per person and R15 per person for supper. Spring Walk - Sunday 9th September 2001 - Plan of action is to meet at the Karkloof Country Club at 9:00am, to double up on the vehicles, or alternatively at the Shawswood workshop. Walking will begin at 10:00am. Please bring your own picnic lunch and refreshments and come and enjoy the magnificent view from the top of the Grey Mares Tail! This is a steep walk so reasonable fitness is required. Ground Hornbill - Our lonely hornbill was recently spotted on Andrew Nineham's farm. Andrew has spoken to David Johnson about this dilemma. Last, but not least. We would like to wish Ian Player, our Karkloof mentor, a quick and speedy recovery from his upcoming back operation. We wish you all good sightings at the game count!! Kind regards,
Carolyn
P.S. Please can you all forward your e-mail addresses to Tracey Mackenzie at tracey@mackenziefarms.cc if you have not already done so. |
